~Too Many Products~
According to Northwestern News (source 3), ” Scientists at Northwestern Medicine found girls ages 7 to 18 are using an average of six different products on their faces, with some girls using more than a dozen products.” I think we can both agree that that’s way too many. Using so many products can actually harm your skin, clog your pores, irritate your skin, damage your skin barrier, and cause more frequent breakouts. The problem isn’t just the amount of products, because some people might need more than others, it’s also the ingredients and chemicals that are in the products.
~Ingredients to Avoid~
- Retinol/retinoids: Can cause irritation and peeling to young skin.
- Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Can cause redness, peeling, and irritation to young skin.
- Peptides/ Growth factors: Unnecessary for young skin and can cause irritation.
- Heavy Fragrances/ Heavy Perfumes: I’m not saying perfumes are bad but too much of heavy fragrance isn’t great.
- Chemical Sunscreens: According to Yale Medicine (source 2), ” Chemical sunscreens, which include filters such as oxybenzone or octinoxate that can be irritating for kids. There is also concern that they could cause hormonal disruption in children.”
~What is Actually Needed~
- A Gentle Cleanser- 2x a day
- Moisturizer- Nighttime (Daytime too if needed)
- Broad-Spectrum SPF 30+- Simple nonchemical sunscreen
Some skin types need more then this but this is a basic start to a less extensive skincare routine.
